Started over a pastrami sandwich
Our founding journey began not in the financial district, but in the lunch line at our neighborhood deli. As analysts at competing firms, Chris and Amanda would inevitably end up bantering about markets over sandwiches each weekday. At first, the other patrons looked on this lively back-and-forth with confusion – why were these two so animated over asset allocation strategies and small cap stocks rather than the usual chit chat?
Over months of pastrami debates, we realized our shared peculiar passion for diving into the nitty gritty of finance. And we could talk circles around what the big firms were missing in their coverage – insights from non-Wall Street perspectives. We dreamed that instead of advising multibillion dollar funds, we could dig into the most interesting but overlooked market angles for everyday investors like us.
After too many rants that held up the register line, we decided to take the plunge into entrepreneurship so we’d have a proper platform for all our ideas and analyses. We scraped together what savings we had, developed a site on a shoestring budget, then soft-launched Market Tangents after work and on weekends last year. Word spread like wildfire among friends (and deli regulars) and soon complete strangers began reading and sharing our unconventional hot takes.
Now Amanda and Chris are delighted to focus all our energy on shedding light on untold stories in the world of finance – no longer getting side-eyed for heated debates by the corner table. We feel so fortunate to connect with open-minded investors who want color beyond the typical black-and-white reporting. And it all sprouted out of sharing sandwiches and trading perspectives at our favorite hangout spot! So in many ways, this website was founded in that deli line – guess you could say the markets and meats are what brought us together. We have such appreciation for the community that’s rallied around Market Tangents so far and look forward to reaching even more unique minds going forward!
