Ciena & Arelion – Breaking Ground with 1.6 Tb/s Wave Data Transmission Ciena & Arelion – Breaking Ground with 1.6 Tb/s Wave Data Transmission

Written By Michael Gary Scott

Ciena Corporation CIEN and Arelion have made history by achieving the world’s first 1.6 terabits-per-second (Tb/s) wavelength data transmission in a live network field trial. This breakthrough was made possible through the utilization of Ciena’s cutting-edge WaveLogic 6 Extreme (WL6e) technology.

Revolutionary Data Transmission Milestone

This revolutionary milestone was accomplished over Arelion’s 470km route connecting its Ashburn, Virginia (Equinix) and Telxius’ Virginia Beach cable landing station. The successful transmission significantly enhances capacity between these critical Points-of-Presence (PoPs) in Arelion’s North American network, setting a new standard for data transmission efficiency and speed.

Boosting Network Performance

Arelion, a key player in addressing connectivity challenges for multinational enterprises reliant on digital infrastructure globally, is set to deploy Ciena’s WL6e across its network following this achievement. The implementation aims to meet the escalating bandwidth demands driven by 5G technology, AI/ML applications, cloud services, and content delivery requirements for both wholesale and enterprise customers.

Innovative Technology Driving Success

The integration of coherent digital signal processing innovations within WL6e has improved energy performance and efficiency. This enhancement provides Arelion with a 50% reduction in space and power consumption per bit, along with a 15% increase in spectral efficiency compared to previous generations. With WL6e, Arelion can efficiently offer multiple 400 and 800 gigabits-per-second (Gb/s) services by leveraging the 1.6 Tb/s line capacity to support higher traffic volumes and faster connectivity speeds across its existing network.

Enabling Next-Generation Solutions

Ciena’s open, programmable 6500 Reconfigurable Line System (“RLS”) played a crucial role in the successful demonstration. RLS simplifies and automates network service provisioning and reconfiguration, showcasing Arelion’s commitment to open optical networking and next-generation coherent optic solutions that drive improvements in network performance, energy efficiency, and cost savings.

Market Performance and Financial Outlook

Ciena, a global leader in optical and routing systems, services, and automation software, saw a 19.6% year-over-year decrease in revenues for the second quarter of fiscal 2024, amounting to $910.8 million. This decline was attributed to a slower-than-anticipated recovery of order volumes from service providers still adjusting to high inventory levels.

However, the persistent demand for bandwidth remains robust as a result of increased cloud adoption and the widespread utilization of AI technology across various sectors.
